Background of the Study
Transportation infrastructure is integral to the economic vitality of Nigerian urban centers. Investments in roads, railways, and public transit systems are designed to enhance mobility, reduce logistics costs, and stimulate commerce (Olumide, 2023). Effective transportation networks facilitate the efficient movement of goods and people, thereby directly influencing urban productivity and competitiveness (Adebayo, 2024). In recent years, several projects have sought to modernize transit systems; however, challenges such as inadequate maintenance, funding shortages, and urban congestion remain prevalent (Uzo, 2023). Scholars argue that the interplay between transportation infrastructure and urban economic performance is complex, as deficiencies in one area can undermine broader economic objectives (Emeka, 2024). This study investigates how transportation investments affect urban economic outcomes, critically examining the direct and indirect effects of transit infrastructure on business activity, job creation, and overall urban quality of life.
Statement of the Problem
Despite significant investments in transportation infrastructure, many Nigerian cities continue to suffer from congestion, inefficient transit systems, and delayed project implementations. These shortcomings impede economic performance by increasing travel times, raising transportation costs, and reducing accessibility to critical markets (Ibrahim, 2023). The challenges of poor maintenance and management further limit the potential benefits of infrastructural improvements, resulting in a persistent gap between investment and actual economic performance. This study aims to investigate the root causes of these infrastructural inefficiencies and assess their impact on urban economic productivity, seeking to propose policy interventions that can optimize transportation outcomes (Chukwu, 2024).
